Madeira may be famous for its wine, history, and volcanic landscape, but this autonomous island of Portugal is so much more. There’s a strong sense of culture, community, and heritage – not to mention, pockets of luxury that practically beg to be photographed. When the Wedding Style team arrived in Portugal for a fashion editorial shoot, we knew Savoy Palace would provide the perfect stage for photographer Kellie Walsh to work her magic. Savoy Palace is elegant, welcoming, and the best place to stay in Madeira.
First Impressions
Upon arrival with multiple bags in tow for our fashion shoot, we were greeted by the most accommodating and hospitable staff. Once inside, we were surrounded by red décor, a magnificent floor-to-ceiling mirror, and an endless stretch of ocean that was visible from the lobby.
We were then greeted by Vanda Perestrelo, the property’s PR Assistant, who led us to Jacaranda on the rooftop for a glass of champagne. Jacaranda also served as our breakfast spot, where we began each day in Madeira with the most spectacular views. During our stay, lunch was enjoyed at the Alameda which served up great cocktails, salads, pizza, and small plates. It was the perfect poolside lunchtime spot, and right next to the ice cream shop.
Dinner at Galaxia
Our most memorable experience at Savoy Palace was dinner at Galaxia Skyfood. Not only does the restaurant have a gorgeous aesthetic, but it actually resembles a galaxy. The menu was impressive, to say the least: Artisan breads with homemade butter; Pastas Bravas with morrell mushroom sauce and marinated eel; Wagyu beef skewers; Beef tenderloin with caramelized eggplant, peas, and fermented garlic puree; and everything was absolutely divine.
The evening was made even better thanks to our waiter Jose, whose knowledge and service was impeccable.
Destination Weddings at Savoy Palace
While we were excited to discover the best place to stay in Madeira and host our fashion shoot, Savoy Palace is also an incredible property for hosting a destination wedding weekend. For starters, Savoy Palace has several activities specially curated for couples including “Breakfast Above the Clouds,” WOW Cocoa and Embroidery Factory Tours, and Madeira wine harvesting in September and October.
“We have a team prepared to organize a wedding in every aspect,” says Rui Sousa, the Banqueting and Conference Manager. “Our colleagues have created programs, including three packages with many options and catering kits. We have four different spaces for wedding ceremonies and receptions, depending on the number of guests. For example, Galaxia Skyfood or Jacaranda Lounge & Club can be booked for a more intimate ceremony or reception of up to 80 people, while the Grand Ballroom can host from 170 to 600 people, since it can be divided into three salons.”
Destination weddings at Savoy Palace can be completely customized, down to a fully personalized wedding menu. Depending on whether couples choose to hire their own wedding planner or work with the in-house team, itineraries can be arranged to include every detail imaginable – from activities for wedding guests, to separate rooms for the couple to get ready with their respective wedding parties before the ceremony. There are also special services like classic cars, which can be arranged to transport the couple anywhere they need to go during the big day.
Heritage and Luxury
As a leading, award-winning property, one of the most remarkable aspects about Savoy Palace is how every staff member has a genuine love not only for the hotel, but also for Madeira and its heritage. There’s a sense of pride in Madeira, and the Savoy Palace family is very keen to share the beauty of the island with their visitors, while enjoying everything from their own luxury haven.
The weather is beautiful year-round. The people are warm and friendly. There are now direct flights from New York to Madeira. Savoy Palace has the most amazing views. Not only is it the best place to stay in Madeira, but it’s a must-see for any travelers making their way through Portugal, and any couple who want to give their guests an unforgettable destination wedding experience.
