Saumya Goel and Khush Aujla both grew up in nearby towns in Mississippi and met when they were attending medical school at UMMC. When Khush was in his third year and Saumya was just about to begin her first, the two would exchange pleasantries at several family parties around Jackson.
“I remember attending Saumya’s high school graduation party back in 2009 at her House, where she didn't even acknowledge me,” Khush recalls. “Once we had both graduated, our brief conversations shifted towards medical school. A few times, I offered my advice on the process and casually sent her my number. Saumya, however, did not get the message, and many months later, messaged me back with a quick question about med school.
THE WEDDING WEEKEND WAS AN ELABORATE WHIRLWIND OF RITUALS AND CELEBRATIONS SPANNING FOUR DAYS.
Surprised, I jumped on the opportunity to ask her out for ice cream, but she casually turned me down. Broken but not dissuaded, I put my charm to work and asked Saumya out on a second date – this time, to her favorite restaurant.”
One date turned into a whirlwind of texting, facetiming, snapchatting, and constantly wanting to hang out with each other. Next came multiple sessions of Netflix binging, celebrations of Ole Miss and Davidson sports, and a never-ending debate on the merits of Harry Potter versus Lord of the Rings. “I knew I wanted to be with Saumya for the rest of my life much earlier than my proposal,” Khush shares. “I planned to propose on an early September weekend, but ended up showering Saumya with butterbeer and wands at Harry Potter World to throw her off.
Her love for travel and adventure was the perfect excuse for me to convince Saumya to take a surprise trip with me to Rochester, New York. I had arranged for her to be let out of her rotation early one day, so her mom and I could kidnap her and take her straight to the airport. She hopped in, we had her favorite food ready (pizza), and had her bags packed. She had no idea where we were off to. We finally made it to Geneva, New York. It was there, on the grounds of a snow-covered castle that I asked Saumya to be my wife.”
That epic proposal eventually led to a multi-day destination wedding at The Breakers in Florida. Two wedding ceremonies were held to honor the traditions of both families, and the wedding weekend was an elaborate whirlwind of rituals and celebrations spanning four days. One of the many highlights included the Sangeet, which was held on a private superyacht. The bride and groom wanted nothing more than to dance under the stars, cruising through Miami, with a world-renown DJ and family and friends surrounding them.
The wedding took place the next day, beginning with a Baraat. After the groom made his entrance in a white Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, a Sikh wedding ceremony was held in the Gold Room at the Breakers. Next was a dazzling Hindu ceremony, complete with a lucite Mandap and a stunning ocean view. An elegant cocktail hour transitioned into a ballroom reception, where the bride wore a custom Falguni Shane Peacock gown, subsequently worn by Miss World. Guests were awestruck by the décor, and the perfect evening unfolded filled with nonstop celebrations.
In April, the newlyweds honeymooned in St. Lucia, staying at the luxurious Jade Mountain Resort.
