Christina Wang and Brian Lam met over a delectable king crab group dinner in New York City’s Chinatown. “I am irrationally obsessed with Alaskan king crab,” Christina reveals. “Our mutual friend Patricia helped me secure an invitation to the crab feast organized by fellow food lover and husband-to-be, Brian. Brian thought this dinner was a sneaky set up, but truly, I was there to get free crab.”
Although Christina thought her host was kind, it was the king crab that stood out most to her. Over the next few months, the two interacted over Instagram, “liking” each other’s food photos. Eight months after their initial meeting, Brian took Christina on their first date, which was a multi-course extravaganza at Bouley that lasted from 9pm to 1am. Together, they spent the next year traveling, eating, and enjoying time as a couple.
“As a girl who always loved romantic stories and weddings, I did not leave anything up to chance,” says Christina. “I decided I wanted to be married in the Fall before my 30th birthday, and our chocolate lab – Phinn – and I decided we liked Nantucket. In fact, by the time Brian proposed, I had already deposited for our wedding venue (the Wauwinet), hired the wedding planner (AaB Creates), and chosen my wedding gown (Monique Lhuillier). Brian finally proposed with my dream ring at the Bouley test kitchen, with the help of famed chef David Bouley, on my 29th birthday!”
With Christina having such a clear vision of what she wanted, the wedding planning process was straightforward – although it was Brian who oversaw the band and his custom Cuban rolled cigars. “The focus of the wedding was for our guests to feel taken care of,” Christina adds. “We wanted New York sophistication, but in the quaint and relaxed Nantucket setting. It was very important for the weekend to reflect our individual personalities and interests. As an accessories designer of my own brand CJW, I designed a special scarf and tote bag that was hand-illustrated with all our favorite things, as a gift to all our wedding guests.”
The wedding day began with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony, followed by a western wedding ceremony on the lawn, a sunset cocktail hour with views of Wauwinet Bay, and a tented reception with coral peonies and gold flatware. Guests especially enjoyed the couple’s six-tier, six-flavor Momofuku wedding cake – so much so, that the newlyweds only had a chance to take a bite during the cake cutting before everyone else finished the rest.
Christina and Brian jetted off on their honeymoon the following spring, and decided to choose a place they had never been to, Marrakech, and somewhere familiar and romantic, Paris. “The honeymoon was filled with delicious food, thoughtful adventures, and a lot of laughter,” Christina recalls. “Our one-year wedding anniversary is coming up, and we cannot wait to return back to Nantucket with our chocolate lab to relive the memories of the best weekend of our lives.”
