When Huan Wei Hee noticed Jasmine Cho outside the gym of his New York City apartment in 2009, he immediately took advantage of the opportunity to meet her. He had just moved in and was happy to find out that she lived in the building as well. He asked her to meet him for drinks and the rest, they say, is history.

“He was comfortable to talk to,” recalls Jasmine. “We started hanging out together.”

After three years together, Wei was working on plans to propose though he admits things didn’t quite turn out the way he intended. Unable to take time off for a weekend in Hawaii due to Jasmine’s law school exam schedule, he opted to awake Jasmine one morning and make his request, wearing his tuxedo.

“I was so sleep deprived, I thought I was dreaming,” Jasmine laughs. “I found out later that he had already asked for my parents’ permission.”

Already living in Hong Kong to pursue their careers at the time, the couple did not immediately start planning the wedding but they did know they wanted to host their event in the city they adore, New York.

“We wanted a destination wedding for all our friends and family from Asia, Europe and South America,” says Jasmine, adding that The Plaza Hotel quickly came to mind as the ultimate New York experience.

While the goal was a formal, black-tie event, they also insisted on infusing a lot of fun.

Indeed, the evening service began with traditional solemnity. Jasmine wore an A-line Monique Lhuillier gown with a delicate lace overlay down the aisle, complete with a cathedral-length veil. Wei awaited her arrival under a canopy of gold embellished tree limbs and leaves.

She confides every moment of the ceremony was special. He couldn’t get over how beautiful she looked.

“How incredibly fortunate and blessed we were to have found each other,” Wei recalls thinking.

Still, it was the after-party that made this event the talk of the town.

Set in The Grand Ballroom of The Plaza Hotel, the reception was an interlude of entertainment, beginning with a mini-piano concert by the bride during the formal, candlelit dinner.

“I played selections known for their romantic finesse,” says Jasmine.

The couple followed the performance with an appearance in traditional Korean attire.

Later, as a surprise for her new husband, Jasmine and her bridesmaids performed their choreographed rendition of “Gangnam Style,” much to the delight of the crowd.

“We practiced for six months before the wedding,” Jasmine laughs. “It was so much fun.”
