From Tom Ford’s fashion show taking place inside the Bowery Street subway station, to Janelle Monae giving a showstopping performance for Ralph Lauren, there was something extra “New York” about this season’s New York Fashion Week. Designers seemed to be returning to their roots while also embracing newer ideas, as their Spring 2020 collections were filled with gorgeous prints, cuts, and embellishments that are fresh yet timeless. Here are six collections we’re loving, and the inspiration behind them.
Oscar de la Renta
Remember when Carrie Bradshaw’s latest obsession was a pink full-skirted Oscar de la Renta dress with a patent leather black bow? The brand’s Spring 2020 collection featured several gowns that look like a modern ode to that creation. To close the de la Renta show, model Irina Shayk took to the runway in a stunning black silk-taffeta ruffled gown – an incredible masterpiece for any black-tie affair.

Tom Ford
As one would expect, the front row of Tom Ford’s New York Fashion Week production was an uber-cool lineup that included Joan Smalls, Ansel Elgort, Miley Cyrus, Russell Westbrook, Amber Valletta, and Naoki Kobayashi. Bold colors and wet look fabrics were balanced by clean, modern cuts, and model Binx Walton showed off a sleek all-white ensemble that would be perfect for brides in search of a more menswear-inspired look. Tom Ford says, “This season for me is about simplicity. Which is not to be confused with simple.”

Carolina Herrera
The #EraofHerrera is real, with creative director Wes Gordon bringing vibrant colors and bold prints to the New York Fashion Week runway. His Spring 2020 collection was inspired by “the botanical phenomenon of the California super bloom.” With so many bright and sunny gowns, this particular collection would be perfect for any spring or summertime bride to wear for a formal bridal shower or rehearsal dinner.

Anna Sui
There’s boho, there’s Victorian, and then there’s “Victorianna” – Anna Sui’s Spring 2020 collection that blends the two ideas together. These feminine, easygoing fashions were practically made for extended honeymoons on the Italian coast.

Badgley Mischka
The Badgley Mischka Spring 2020 collection combines luxe embellishments with effortless glamour, offering a cohesive lineup of ensembles that can outfit a bride for every possible event of her wedding experience.

Ralph Lauren
As an all-American classic, Ralph Lauren remained true to his brand with a Fall/Winter 2019 collection that alluded to big band glamour with tuxedo lapels, plunging necklines, and a bevy of sequins. Bella Hadid was the evening’s “lady in red,” wowing the crowd in a statement-making red sequined gown.
