REAL WEDDING | A BOHEMIAN-INSPIRED BEACH WEDDING IN GREECE

Kathryn Shutt and Alex Phillips first met at university in 2002, which led to a whirlwind nine-month romance. Although their relationship was filled with fun and love, “young foolishness”–as Alex puts it–got in the way, and the pair heartbreakingly called it quits. “We still remained friends for the next ten years,” Alex explains, “and after a bit of growing up and soulmate searching, we realized we had already found each other; and we got back together!”

It didn’t take long for the couple’s rekindled romance to bloom, and they soon found themselves moving in together in London. “I realized one morning whilst lying ill on the sofa that I wanted to spend my life with Kat,” Alex says. “I made a plan to propose with her Nana’s ring (which I knew she’d always wanted), after getting her dad’s blessing.”

The proposal took place while the lovebirds were holidaying in Croatia. During an epic thunderstorm, the two found shelter in a charming little Croatian restaurant in town, ironically called “Split.” After playing a round of drinking games, Alex casually pushed the ring box across the table and asked, “What about the ‘will you marry me’ game?” Of course, Kat accepted, and the newly-engaged duo bought a house and moved to Cambridge the following year.

Kat and Alex’s destination wedding in Greece was an unforgettable experience. During the wedding planning process, Kat worked diligently with wedding planners Kyriaki and Joseph, creating a relaxed and shabby-chic wedding day in the sun. The wedding celebration was held right by the sea in a beautiful restaurant and beach bar called Ammothines. Not only did the Ammothines team exceed all expectations, but the entire wedding went smoothly.

The groom’s brothers, Ed and Hyde, emceed the wedding and the best man delivered memorable speeches and songs. The bride’s mother fought back tears while reading a touching poem, and her father broke into song just before Bouzouki players took over for some Greek music and dancing.

“We ate, drank, and danced the night away; and we woke up to views over the Aegean Sea to begin our lives as Mr. and Mrs. Phillips,” says Alex. “It was truly the best day ever.”
