FASHION | 15 FABULOUSLY CAMP LOOKS AT THE 2019 MET GALA

This year, the annual Met Gala in New York City was given the theme of, “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” Now, if there’s any rules to follow when it comes to being camp, it’s simply this – be ostentatious, have fun, and don’t take yourself too seriously. In keeping with this theme, the pink carpet was rolled out for a parade of fabulously camp looks from the world’s top designers, worn by the world’s biggest celebrities. Here are some of our favorite moments.

It’s safe to say that Lady Gaga put on the most entertaining (and extremely campy) fashion show, wearing an exclusive design by Brandon Maxwell. Beginning with a hot pink parachute dress and enormous bow headpiece, the singer shed layer upon layer right on the pink carpet, revealing an exquisite black evening gown, a sleek pink column gown, and finally a “lingerie rock star” look that only Gaga could pull off. Her entire vibe and performance couldn’t have been more on point with the evening’s theme.

Saoirse Ronan became the new “Mother of Dragons” with a sequined, armor-inspired number by Gucci. Game of Thrones fans were loving it.

Taking a cue from Picasso, Christian Siriano designed an incredible, over-the-top look for Janelle Monae, complete with an eye with moving lashes!

As expected, many celebrities donned statement shoulders, capes, and opera coats. Florence Welch looked stunningly ethereal in a jeweled gown and cape by Gucci, washed in a turquoise and lilac color palette.

Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse were a perfectly campy couple, with Cole channeling Pinocchio and Lili served up “Marie Antoinette in short shorts” with a gorgeous, off-shoulder ensemble by Salvatore Ferragamo.

Before Gaga took over, it was Gwen Stefani who embodied “camp” during the nineties! The songstress showed up in a fabulously overstated bodysuit, fishnet stockings, and fur coat from Moschino by Jeremy Scott.

Kacey Musgraves, arguably, nailed this year’s Met Gala theme harder than anyone. Barbie is the epitome of camp, and Kacy was transformed into a real life Barbie Girl in a custom, hot pink Moschino masterpiece.

With a head-to-toe metallic and feather ensemble, complete with a hood and fabulously campy boots, Gigi Hadid was a gorgeous portrayal of camp in custom Michael Kors.

Naomi Campbell had the crowd screaming, “YASS, QUEEN!” as she strode onto the pink carpet in a Pier Paolo Piccioli for Valentino Haute Couture gown. She even brought along an assistant to fan her down the runway – a diva moment that couldn’t have been more apropos.

Not surprisingly, J.Lo and A-Rod have been labeled as the hottest couple of the 2019 Met Gala, with J.Lo showing up in a megawatt dress created by Luigi Massi.

Gemma Chan was absolutely flawless in a dreamy, silver ensemble by Tom Ford.

Few men can turn heads quite like Jared Leto, who made his grand entrance wearing a red Gucci gown and carrying a prop of his own decapitated head like a clutch.

Of course, Anna Wintour looked lovely as ever with her interpretation of camp being an embellished Chanel column gown, topped with a feathered cape.

Kim Kardashian, quite simply, is the modern day definition of camp. The reality star wore a nude Thierry Mugler creation, with embellishments made to look like she was dripping wet, and an impossibly cinched waist. She commented that she had already arranged for donuts to be delivered as soon as the corset came off.

Billy Porter wowed the crowd as he was carried in on the shoulders of several Broadway dancers, revealed a golden Sun God ensemble created by The Blonds, and opened his arms to display incredible 10-foot wings. Half fashion, half performance art, and 100% camp.
