Down on One Knee

Jeremy Fields always had somewhat of a crush on his best friend’s older sister, April Miller. When he’d spend the night, he and April would often end up sitting on the basement stairs talking until the early morning hours.

Although life took them on separate paths, the ease the two had with each other never faded. “Periodically in my life I would return to see her just to talk,” recalls Jeremy. “And to have that feeling of being completely understood.”

In the summer of 2003, only days after April had proclaimed to a friend that she was “as single as single can be,” Jeremy showed up unexpectedly to declare the feelings he’d had for a long time. April, concerned about making the transition from family friend to romantic partner, initially tried to keep things platonic. But time spent together only deepened her feelings for him and she could no longer deny that it actually was possible for your brother’s best friend to also be “the one.”

When Jeremy accompanied April to a conference in New Orleans, little did she know that he had been busy making plans to propose. Working with a friend and jeweler, Jeremy had found the perfect stone, though flawless it wasn’t the radiant cut he wanted. It was shipped to New York to be re-cut and mounted, before being sent to the hotel. “I didn’t know if it would be ready in time,” remembers Jeremy, “so when I got the call from the concierge I was so excited. We had reservations at Brennan’s, so before dinner we took a walk to Jackson Square and in front of the fountain that overlooks St. Louis Cathedral, I stopped, and said, ‘there is no one I would rather spend my life with.’”

After April jokingly asked, “shouldn’t you be down on one knee?” she accepted.

Wade Lagoon near the Cleveland Museum of Art provided the perfect location for the intimate Labor Day weekend wedding. Surrounded by 33 of their closest family and friends, the couple exchanged personalized vows. “Seeing her walk down the path, exquisite in her gown and beautiful smile only reiterated what I already felt,” says Jeremy. “That I was the luckiest man in the world.”

“Everything happened as if it was always meant to be,” April says. “Seeing him there, holding his hands, looking into his eyes – nothing else ever felt so right.”

After jaunting about the city in an antique car, stopping to take photos, the newlyweds headed to Three Birds Restaurant to celebrate with guests. Appetizers and drinks in the courtyard were followed by dinner and dancing upstairs.

“She pushes me to do more and be more than I ever thought I could do or be,” says Jeremy. “Being loved by her is the greatest thing in the world.”

“He is my best friend,” April adds. “A hug from him makes everything right. We still feel like those young kids staying up and talking all night long, it’s an unbelievable feeling to have found that in someone.”
